Dong Energy to build 660 MW Walney Extension

Dong Energy has decided to construct the 660 MW Walney Extension offshore wind farm, located in the Irish Sea, approximately 19 km off the west coast of Britain. It will be the world’s biggest offshore wind farm.

Siemens turbines for Belgian offshore wind farm

Rentel NV has chosen Siemens as its preferred bidder for the supply and installation of turbines for Rentel offshore wind farm. Siemens will deliver 42 turbines of its SWT 7.0-154 model, involving a 15-year maintenance agreement as well.

Danish-German interconnector gets push forward


Overview over Kriegers Flak – Combined Grid Solution (Source: 50Hertz/ and 50Hertz plan to establish a 400 MW offshore interconnection between the Danish and the German national power grids. The European Commission has now granted the revised technical layout for this world’s first offshore interconnection that is using the national grid connections to offshore wind farms.

First internal cable installed at the Sandbank wind farm

Work has begun on the internal cabling at the Sandbank wind farm 90 km off the coast of Sylt. Vattenfall and Stadtwerke München report that they have laid the first power cable between two foundations at the offshore project.

After seven years of planning and construction, the 400-MW offshore wind farm Global Tech I off the German North Sea coast was officially inaugurated on 2 September.

Trianel inaugurates first municipal offshore wind farm

Trianel, a major European consortium consisting of 33 municipal utilities and based in Aachen, Germany, commissioned the Trianel Wind Farm Borkum on 1 September. The world's first municipal offshore wind farm is located 45 kilometres off the coast of the German North Sea island of Borkum.

MHI Vestas signs contract for 450 MW Borkum Riffgrund 2

MHI Vestas Offshore Wind was confirmed as the preferred supplier for Borkum Riffgrund 2. Following negotiations with Dong Energy, the two companies have reached an agreement for the supply of V164-8.0 MW turbines to the project.

Dong Energy acquires complete Hornsea Zone

Dong Energy acquired the Hornsea Zone and the project rights to Hornsea Project 2 and 3, which have the potential of 3 GW offshore wind capacity. This follows Dong’s acquisition of Hornsea Project 1, a 1.2 GW offshore wind project in Round 3, which was announced in February 2015.

VBMS contracted for Rampion export cabling

VBMS has been awarded a contract by E.ON for the installation of two 16 kilometre-long export cables for the Rampion Offshore Wind Farm. The 150 kV HVAC cables will transport the power ashore from the 400 MW wind farm to the onshore cable in Brooklands Pleasure Park in Worthing, South East England.

Dogger Bank: planning for a total of 4.8 GW approved


After the approval for Dogger Bank Creyke Beck A & B in February, the planning of Dogger Bank Teesside A & B has also been approved. Meanwhile, project developer Forewind removed Dogger Bank Teesside C & D from its portfolio.
