Adwen begins testing the AD 8-180 in Bremerhaven

Adwen has begun testing the drive train of the AD 8-180 at the IWES Dynamic Nacelle Testing Laboratory (DYNALAB) in Bremerhaven. The validation process will continue until the end of the year and includes mechanical and electrical tests of the drive train and the primary tower components as a unit.

Scientists perform extreme load and fatigue load tests at the laboratory, which opened in October 2015. The laboratory simulates real-world operating conditions for the validation process. The testing procedure permits the validation of parts of systems both standalone and fully integrated. The complete drive train can be validated under full load. The manufacturer's aim with the simulations is to reduce the duration of field-testing to accelerate the certification process.

The preparation work on the test rig started towards the end of last year. The drive train was transported to DyNaLab in April 2016, where mechanical assembly followed, along with the installation of additional fittings for sensors and the lubrication system. More than 350 sensors on the drive train gather important data during the tests. In a further step, the entire nacelle of the AD 8-180 will be brought to the IWES DyNaLab to undergo final testing. Installation of a prototype with this nacelle is scheduled for the end of the year in Bremerhaven.

Farstad, Volstad and Kleven are combining forces to establish the ship-owning company Norwind Offshore. The company will offer specialised vessels designed specifically for advanced maritime operations in the development and service of the offshore wind sector. Norwind Offshore has entered into a contract with Vard for the delivery of three vessels by 2024 - with options for two more vessels in 2025. The first vessel is due to be delivered in 2022.

Temporis Investment Management (“Temporis”) has on October 11th announced the launch of Inis Offshore Wind, a new Irish renewable energy firm with plans to develop at least 1GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030. This would constitute a significant contribution to Ireland’s offshore wind targets and provide enough electricity to power over 800,000 homes.
