Turbines and connection for Beatrice offshore windfarm

Siemens received an order to supply, install and commission 84 wind turbines with a capacity of 7 MW each for the Scottish offshore wind farm Beatrice. In addition to the turbines, the company will supply the onshore and offshore substations for the project.

The SWT-7.0-154 wind turbines for the 588 MW project will be installed on jacket foundations in ocean depths between 35 and 56 meters. Additionally, Siemens will also supply the offshore grid connection to the mainland in consortium with Nexans who will provide the connecting 33 kV array export cables. Siemens will deliver the onshore and offshore substations consisting of two offshore transformer modules which are one third smaller in size and weight compared to a conventional alternating-current platform and thus saving costs.

Mirko Düsel, CEO Transmission Solutions Business Unit at Siemens commented: “The application of light weight distributed substations is an important lever for reaching Siemens' goal of reducing the costs of wind power generated offshore to below 10 €-ct/kWh by 2020.”

The company Subsea 7 S.A. received the contract to perform the engineering, procurement, construction and installation works for Beatrice Offshore Windfarm Ltd. Seaway Heavy Lifting will work on this together with Subsea 7 and will jointly project manage, design, engineer, fabricate and install the jacket foundations and array cables for the wind turbines and will perform the transportation and installation of the offshore transmission modules.

Siemens plans to produce the wind turbine blades for Beatrice wind farm at its Hull facility. The installation of the turbines is scheduled for the summer of 2018, while commissioning is planned for 2019. In the course of a service contract, Siemens will also be responsible for service and maintenance of the turbines over the following 15 years.

“This is a significant order for our new 7 megawatt-class wind turbine”, stated Michael Hannibal, CEO of the Offshore Market Unit of the Siemens Wind Power and Renewables Division.

Beatrice Offshore Windfarm Ltd. is a partnership formed between SSE (40%), Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (35%) and SDIC Power (25%). The offshore wind power plant's capacity of 588 MW will be sufficient to supply more than 400,000 UK households with ecofriendly electricity.
